A shipping invoice describes the items being sent (shipped) from one person or business to another and the applied charges for the service. The business term for a shipping invoice is a bill of lading. The BOL provides the necessary details for a carrier to schedule pick-up and delivery of the goods to the customer.

The BOL should be signed by the carrier when the cargo is picked up and then signed for by the consignee once delivery is made.
